Going on an interview can be nervous for a number of reasons; you want to make the right impression and put your best front forward not only with your skill set but also in presentation. Part of that presentation is what you wear in your interview.

With so many options on what you should and shouldn’t wear on an interview, this process can definitely become overwhelming and possibly end up costing you some serious cash before you even get the job.

Having gone on a number of interviews myself, here are three tips to ensure that you don’t spend the night before your interview ransacking your closet and totally stressing out over the perfect outfit.

Feel Comfortable, Feel Confident

What I learned over the years of looking at Pinterest boards and brainstorming what to wear for an interview is that wearing  comfortable pieces will help you feel confident. If heels aren’t your thing, wear flats. If 3-piece suits are too bulky, pair a nice blouse with some slacks that coordinate. There are no hard and fast rules regarding specific colors, styles, or items that will guarantee you the job, but showing them your confidence and winning personality can guarantee a memorable first impression.

Second Hand is Best

Suits and professional wear can really make a dip in your back account. A well-fitting suit or fancy shoes can run you thousands of dollars. A great way to keep your budget in check is to shop at second-hand stores for lightly-worn professional wear. Comb through thrift stores for staple items like jackets and blouses that can pair with clothing already in your wardrobe. You are likely to find  designer items for a fraction of their retail price. Steam or have them professionally dry-cleaned and they will be as good as new!

Neutrals Are Boss

If you are unsure of what to wear because of the company’s unknown dress-code, a good rule of thumb is to stick to neutral colors. Black,, beige, greys, and blues can make an outfit professional and put-together without clashing. With that in mind, if you feel best in a color that isn’t neutral like yellow or pink, incorporate that color into your neutral palette for an outfit that is perfectly you!
